Here's a crash course in SEO. Search engine optimization distills into two activities: on-page and off-page SEO.
On-page means the optimization efforts made on or in website. For example, the keywords chosen and their placement is a good example of on-page optimization techniques.
Keyword research requires assessing the numbers - how often it's searched and the competition for those terms. By competition I mean the number of other sites that use the keywords (or keyword phrases).
What is off-page search engine optimization? In a nutshell it's getting backlinks to your sites. Backlinks help your sites rank well in the search engines.
For example, a link from Fox News website is far more valuable than a link from your local hair salon owned by a friend. You also want links from websites and blogs that are related in content to your site.
Rules of the game: get lots of links to your site. Get links to your site from sites that are related to your site. Get links from sites that have a lot of authority. Authority is primarily determined by page rank.
Is it easy getting links? You bet, but it takes work. There a three main styles of link building.
1. Write such good content other sites want to link to you. This is the attraction method.
2. Be a deal-maker by link exchanging with related websites. E-mail a site owner or webmaster and ask for a link exchange.
3. Create inbound links by writing and publishing content on sites outside your website.
I focus on option three. I like the control and I like the links to my site being one-way. I've done link exchanging but it's an ongoing headache.
The downside to this method is it requires a pretty hefty investment of your time to do it well and effectively. However, there are excellent SEO services you can check out that vastly speed up the process.
That said, if you look, there are more efficient ways to create these links outside your site with top quality SEO services.
